On 7/26/08 we started the process of dividing in two our largest, slowest loading page.

The original index/glossary page covered Kesa thru Kuruma. Now it is made up of

1) Kesa thru Kodansah and2) Kōgai thru Kuruma.

Click on the two images posted below to go to those  pages.

Kesa thru Kodansha            Kōgai thru Kuruma

***

On 7/19/08 we added new information to our entry on kuro yuri or the black lily

on our Kesa thru Kuruma index/glossary page. Updated on 7/20/08.

***

On 7/18/08 we added new information to our entry on fukujuso or Adonis flower

on our De thru Gen index/glossary page.

***

On 7/17/08 we have also added a few words about matsuri or festivals on our

Kutsuwa thru Mok index/glossary page.

***

On 7/17/08 we added a few words about yamaboko or festival float on our

Yakusha thru Z index/glossary page.

***

On 7/15/08 we added a new variant seal from the Ise-ya Rihei publishing house.

This contribution comes from the Eikei (英渓) Collection.

This example appears on three of our pages:

Publisher seals

Publishers H thru J

&

Kuniyoshi and his publishers - page 2.

***

What do the bloody severed head and the camellia flower have in common.

To find out go to our Tengu thru Tsuzumi index/glossary page and look at our new entry for tsubaki.

This was added on 7/14/08.

***

On 7/14/08 we added a few more words by Lafcadio Hearn on the subject of the Russo-Japanese War.

You can find this on our Ro thru Seigle index/glossary page.

***

On 7/13/08 we added a few words by Lafcadio Hearn about the jingoistic design elements of the Japanese

during the Russo-Japanese War. This can be found under our entry for kanzashi

on our Kakuremino thru Ken'yakurei index/glossary page.

***

On 7/13/08 we added information about how to survive a kappa attack

on our Kakuremino thru Ken'yakurei index/glossary page.

Or, for more info about kappas and flatulence go to our Yoshitoshi Kappa Control page.

***

The flaming pearl is almost ubiquitous in Chinese art and appears frequently in borrowed motifs in Japan.

It is a bit of a puzzler. Go to our Hil thru Hor index/glossary page to see what we have added on 7/12/08.

Look under our entry for hōju.

For examples of the lightening and thunder motifs in Japanese print form go to our page devoted to lightening images.

***

On 7/11/08 we divided in two our Hil thru I Index/Glossary page.

Click on the horo frame to go to our new Hil thru Hor page

and the anchor to go to our new Hos thru I page.

Recently we have been dividing up the more cumbersome, larger pages which

are basically informational - but fun too, we hope. Anyway, we will continue this

process for some time - it will take a while - while doing everything else. So,

on 7/10/08 we divided our first index/glossary page into two parts.

The first one is devoted to A thru Ankō and the second Aoi thru Bl.

Click on the dancing bearded baby above to go the the first one

and the beautiful woman with the tortoiseshell hairpieces go go to the second.

***

On 7/8/08 we divided in two our page devoted Kuniyoshi and his publishers.

We did this because it was the largest and slowest loading page on our site.

To go directly to the first page click on the head above on the left

and for the second page click on the one on the right.

***

On 7/7/08 we added an entry on this book to our Yakusha thru Z index/glossary page.

You should make sure you get a copy for yourself.

Not available for sale in the U.S. until October.

***

On 7/7/08 we added a historical note indicating how old the practice of tooth blackening must be in Southeast Asia.

You can find this reference under our entry for ohaguro on our O thru Ri index/glossary page.

***

On 7/6/08 we reduced the size of our 3rd thumbnail page devoted to prints

we are offering for sale. That page should open considerably faster

because it is about half as large as it was previously with the

same number of listings. However, if you click on the Yoshida

baby you will go directly to that page.

***

On 7/5/08 we slimmed down the size of our A thru G publishers page

so it will load a little faster, too.

***

On 7/5/08 we trimmed the size of our Kuniyoshi and his publishers page, but only by a smidgen.

That way it may open a little more quickly.

***

On 7/5/08 we added a few notes on the role played by President Roosevelt in ending the Russo-Japanese War.

These can be found on our Ro thru Seigle index/glossary page.

***

On 7/3/08 we made more changes to our second list of thumbnails of prints currently for sale.

Like the publishers page linked below you won't notice any significant differences,

but by streamlining it it should load considerably faster.

***

On 7/2/08 we made changes to our N to Z publishers page to make it load more quickly.

You won't notice any other changes to that page except the prints shown are somewhat larger.

***

Today, 6/30/08, we started a quest to unlock some of the secrets of who the most famous carvers were, when they worked, who they worked for and who they worked with.

We started with the carver Hori Chō. What paltry information we found can be found on our Hil thru I index/glossary page.

We noted this also on our Etsu Ka  and Eikyudo entries, on our A thru G publishers  page.

And the same for Tsunoi on our N thru Z page.

And Izutsu-ya Sanemon on our H thru J page.

***

On 6/29/08 we made some minor corrections - and we do mean minor -

to a page devoted to a Kuniyoshi print we have already sold.

However, one of the corrections was egregious and

we are sorry we hadn't taken care of it before now.

***

On 6/29/08 we posted a notice about something which our visitors already knew:

There will be no more additions to our 2nd Bad Boys and Their Tattoos page.

Sorry for being such a slacker in getting this stated clearly and definitively.

My bad!

***

On 6/29/ we added a few notes on the nature of the hōmyō or posthumous Buddhist name given right after death -

along with a few other bits of similar information. This can be found on our Hil thru I index/glossary page.

***

On 6/28/08 we added a new entry on the jizai kagi or pot hook

on our J thru Kakuregasa index/glossary page.
